Genius Hour 8

My genius hour started and ended this week by attempting to set a realistic goal. After discussing with past friends who are real seasoned marathon runners they agreed that often people set very lofty goals. This then leads to them coming out of the gates at a very fast pace that is simply not attainable to hold for the length of the race. This ends up with people usually dropping out of the race as they completely burn themselves out. Therefore, I really wanted to set a strong but attainable goal.

Furthermore, this week I found that the trouble I had was considering the variety of perspectives that were available. Over the past few years I have involved myself in the running community and have had the opportunity to meet some very knowledgeable people. I began to contact them with a variety of questions around how they set their goals for different races. I received a variety of recommendations and conflicting views around these questions as they have all had different experiences within a variety of race settings. I had to take all of these suggestions into consideration and took bits and pieces from each person's perspectives that I thought resonated with my training journey.

Going back to look at my time last year I ran the half marathon in 2 hours and 7 minutes and this is a time I definitely want to improve upon. Based upon the long runs that I have done throughout this training block I believe I should be able to achieve a time between 1:55-1:59. This will allow me to beat my personal best time and I think this will still be an achievable goal as I did absolutely no training last year. Therefore, with the addition of a curated training block and a commitment to a strong diet I think this will be a time I can reach. Although, I must keep in mind what has been preached to me constantly. Throughout the race I must listen to my body and what it is telling me. There is going to be a fine line of pushing hard and overdoing it and I need to ensure that I am on the former.
