Genius Hour 3

During this week's genius hour it was composed of me filling out my running review template. This will allow me to look back on the weeks and really gauge how effective a running method is. This week I began with the Maffetone method, this method is considered to be a great aid to build off of and a fantastic starting spot for runners. The premise is to never let your heart rate go over your aerobic maximum heart rate. I found this too be quite difficult, as someone who has always just ran for leisure and never followed a program too seriously it was a learning process to stick to the program. I had to constantly check my watch to ensure i was staying under my prescribed heart rate. This definitely took some getting used to, although I found it also took a lot of fun out of the running process for myself. I have always been one who liked to really push it at the end of a run or if I find myself lined up with a large incline I would always try and keep a strong pace and push myself. It was definitely a change in pace literally and figuratively. I also had some trouble balancing work and the gym outside of this training schedule. This will be a continuous work in progress as there were runs throughout this week where I wasn't able to run as long as I would have liked due to the fact that I had to go to work. Additionally, I found that I also had some trouble with the recovery aspect while going to the gym whilst doing the running program. I think that I will have to really commit to creating a structured schedule to ensure that I am able to get ample time to recover and to run throughout the weeks. As for the coming weeks, I have to make a decision whether I want to continue with this form of training or move on to one of the other methods. I find that this method doesn't really push me too far and I don’t know how much I am truly getting out of it. Although for someone who is beginning to run or train for a race, I believe that this is a fantastic method. It really helps you pace yourself and won't force you to exert a tremendous amount of energy throughout the run. It can be used as a great building block for getting into more complex training programs.
